5. Some MIT students outsmarted the system
Some shrewd MIT students figured a way to buy tickets that guaranteed a big win in the Massachusetts state Cash WinFall game. By purchasing $600,000 worth of lotto tickets (spread out over key days during a span of 5 years), they were able to earn a 10-15% return on their investment.
The whiz kids were eventually able to quit their jobs and ended up bilking the lottery system out of $8 million.
This wasn’t the first gambling misconduct for the school: in 2002, some students and a professor were involved in a Vegas card-counting scandal. That incident was the basis for the movie 21, starring Kevin Spacey.
