12 Weird Things Scientologists Don’t Want You to Know

1. There have been 3 deaths at a Scientology HQ

The Fort Harrison Hotel in Clearwater, Florida is the spiritual headquarters of Scientology. The complex, which was purchased by the Church in 1975, boasts 220 rooms in 11 stories, a swimming pool, and lavish décor.

The luxury accommodations are also, however, used for the Church’s Rehabilitation Project Force, which is a program used to punish members for “serious deviations.” Former Church members have reported that the “rehabilitation” process is brutal, and that people in the program are “subjected to prison-like conditions, forced labor, and many more acts against simple human rights.”

Three people have died at the hotel, all under mysterious circumstances. And almost as alarming is the number of emergency calls from the building fielded by police: 160 in 1997 alone. Every single time emergency personnel responded, they were barred from entering the premises.

(Interesting but unrelated note: In 1965, the Rolling Stones wrote their hit song “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” at the hotel)
