Scientology members have to pony up significant amounts of money to participate in “audits,” or confessional sessions, which have the goal of “restoring beingness and ability…. helping individuals rid themselves of any spiritual disabilities; [and] increasing spiritual abilities.”
These sessions involve the use of e-meters, which are essentially crude lie detectors. Participants discuss intimate details of their lives with an auditor, someone resembling a priest. In at least one Scientology auditing exercise, the auditor and participant sit close together in chairs without arms, with their knees intertwined. This close physical contact has led to several cases of sexual misconduct, which is especially problematic as many auditors are only in their teens. A past Scientology leader stated that “teens make the SWINGINEST auditors.”
One source indicates that auditing costs $3,200 per 12 1/2 hour session. That’s some serious dough.
