9. A WWII fighting bear loved beer
Wojtek (pronounced Voytek) was a Syrian brown bear who was adopted by Polish soldiers and later helped them fight in WWII. Wojtek is an old Slavic name that means “he who enjoys war” or “joyful warrior”.
Wojtek began his military career with the rank of Private. He later advanced to Corporal. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, the bear helped move crates of ammunition. He was often rewarded with beer and cigarettes (which he sometimes ate, rather than smoked).
