One of the top reported negative side effects of Ambien is sleep-eating.

Cliff Bostock, a popular columnist and food critic for Creative Loafing Atlanta, shared his Ambien experience with readers in 2013.

In his column, Bostock describes his late-night food binges brought on when he took Ambien. He even woke up with a “Nutella facial mask” during one of those episodes.

A woman featured in a New York Times article about the sleep-eating phenomena actually gained over 100 pounds eating at night, with no recollection of it the next day. She finally asked her son to sit and watch her during the night to find out where all the candy bar wrappers and Popsicle sticks littering her room were coming from.

Here’s video of a woman purported to be asleep and on Ambien, who continues to eat although her eyes remain closed and her head lolls around.
