7. A New Hope – Dewbacks
Everyone knows that dewbacks were large, four-legged, omnivorous, cold-blooded reptiles native to the Dune Sea of Tatooine. In the Special Edition of the film, Lucas used cutting edge digital animation technology to create these monitor-like creatures for stormtroopers to ride on in various scenes that take place on the desert planet.
Watching the film today reveals the limitations of creature animation in the late 90’s as their movements look entirely un-real and awkward and distract from the story’s progress. It feels like a practice run for Anakin’s ride on the reek during the arena battle in Attack of the Clones.
